unique dye destruction print
Photography began as a host for the imprint of time. Like a fossil come to life, Learoyd’s portraits result from marathon sittings of eight hours on average before an enormous camera obscura. Learoyd creates these images in two connected rooms - one is the camera and the other is the studio- designed to produce a print that is the exact size of the sitter. Learoyd manages to startle and seduce us; the pleasure of detailed looking draws us into a photographic space that appears infinite and vast. Yet, even in this work, no amount of detail ever transmits a full picture of any sitter.
