Roses and Cables, from the series What Remains, 2007
Jessica Backhaus (born 1970, Cuxhaven, Germany; lives New York, NY)

Todd Hido: “She finds something in the quotidian of life, where most people aren’t looking.”

In Roses and Cables, from the series What Still Remains, Jessica Backhaus has transformed an assortment of cables and scrolls on a stripped bed into a still life in the Northern Renaissance tradition, faded flowers on an old mattress standing in for the requisite blooms on the cusp of decay. Muted pastels contribute to a feeling of nostalgia while the disorganized heap suggests a transition, or an ending.
