To describe his work, Christian Patterson has said, “I am fascinated with the idea of presence, or what I sometimes refer to as a ‘phantom event’: something that you cannot see in a photograph, but you feel or know to be there.” The oblique camera angle suggests a singular, personal point of view, as if the photograph has recorded a quick glance at the ceiling. As to the rest of the room’s contents, viewers are left in the dark.
