Todd Hido: “These works are interesting to me because they seem to picture a partially visible memory.”

TR Ericsson used the smoke from hundreds of lit cigarettes to fix these images on paper, recreating the way his mother’s chain-smoking gradually stained the walls of their house. Ericsson has described his mother’s habit as a “vigil” and in these works the artist keeps faith. The hazy, indistinct nature of the images echoes the difficulty of fixing memories permanently in the face of mortality.
