Since 2007, Richard Renaldi has been asking complete strangers to physically interact while posing together for a portrait. Using a large-format 8 x 10 view camera, Renaldi directs the strangers to touch each other in varied, but intimate ways, so that a viewer who knows nothing of the premise might interpret an existing relationship among the participants. While some subjects evince discomfort or awkwardness, more often the results are convincing, demonstrating a real longing for physical human connection in a world of increasingly virtual contact.
