Todd Hido: “There’s a shared sensibility between us. The way that we make a portrait is very simple—put the person next to a window, use natural light. I also love the awkwardness of the work. It makes it interesting.”

Hellen van Meene makes photographs of adolescents that idealize the uncertainty and self-consciousness of young people. Her work epitomizes the maxim that fiction is better at revealing truth than fact. Van Meene’s artful costuming choices and stylized poses expose the vulnerability of her subjects while the beautiful light and contemplative mood pay tribute to their inherent dignity.
